New Delhi [India], June 24 (ANI): Amid constant criticism by opposition parties claiming that the country’s constitution is in danger, JD(U) leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan, alias Lalan Singh, rubbished such claims and said the opposition wants government intervention to refrain constitutional bodies from taking actions against the guilty.
Lalan Singh, who took the oath as MP on Monday, said, “How is the Constitution in danger? The Constitution is not in danger. It is not being changed. If their thinking is that the action being taken by the constitutional bodies should be stopped by government intervention, and if it’s not been done, then they say the constitution is in danger. It’s not under the government; constitutional bodies are doing their work. You reap what you sow,” he added.
Singh’s remarks came after INDIA bloc leaders on Monday carried out a protest holding copies of the Constitution inside the Parliament premises amid the row over the appointment of Bhartruhari Mahtab as pro-tem speaker as the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha commenced today.
Ahead of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at the opposition over the emergency while addressing media persons outside the new Parliament building before taking oath as a Member of Parliament.
Recalling the 21-month period of emergency that was implemented in the country on June 25, 1975, PM Modi said the new generation of India will never forget that time when the country was turned into a prison, adding that they will take a resolution of a vibrant democracy so that no one will dare to do such a thing in India again.
“Tomorrow is 25th June. 25th June marks 50 years since the blot that was put on the democracy of India. The new generation of India will never forget that the Constitution of India was completely rejected, every part of the Constitution was torn to pieces, the country was turned into a prison, and democracy was completely suppressed,” he said.
Later, responding to the PM’s remark, former CM and BJP MP Basavaraj Bommai said, “Certainly, it’s a black mark in the annals of democracy in this country…They had really twisted and turned the Constitution. Now, the Congress leaders are holding the Constitution in their hands. It was the very Constitution that they murdered. They are holding the piece of the Constitution that they murdered on June 25, 1975…They (Congress) reminded the people that these are the people who murdered democracy…They don’t have the right to talk about democracy and the Constitution of the country.” (ANI)
