New Delhi [India], December 17 (ANI): Senior Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Indresh Kumar on Tuesday welcomed the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, calling it a step towards realising the foundational principles of India’s Constitution and asserting that it aims to strengthen the country’s democratic structure.
Describing the initiative as a significant move, Kumar said it aligns with the core values of India’s Constitution.
“We have taken one step forward with the introduction of ‘One Nation, One Election.’ Ye Constitution ki ‘moolavdharana’ hai (This is the fundamental essence of the Constitution),” said Indresh Kumar.
He added, “The ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill will be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for discussions and suggestions. The bill will be revised and amended before being reintroduced for formal deliberations and approval in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.”
Highlighting its intent, Kumar noted that the initiative aims to strengthen democratic processes and streamline electoral practices in line with the vision laid out in the Constitution.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed sharp opposition to the proposal, raising concerns about its potential impact on India’s federal structure.
“The government wants to end the entire federal structure of India just to save 0.02 per cent of the annual budget,” said Gogoi, adding that the bill would concentrate more power in the Election Commission of India (ECI).
He argued that the government justifies the bill by citing cost savings achieved through reduced election frequency.
In a related development, sources revealed that the BJP is likely to issue notices to over 20 MPs who were absent during the division vote on the bill’s introduction in the Lok Sabha. The party had earlier issued a three-line whip, directing all MPs to be present, citing an important legislative agenda.
During the division, 269 members voted in favour of introducing the bill, while 196 voted against it.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha. These bills propose simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Home Minister Amit Shah stated that when the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal was discussed in the cabinet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that the bill should be sent to the JPC for detailed deliberation.
Following its introduction, the bills will now be reviewed by the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further examination and suggestions.
The ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal seeks to streamline electoral processes, reduce costs, and ensure simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. (ANI)
