Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], April 17 (ANI): BRS working president KT Rama Rao on Thursday said that Congress misused the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) when the opposition party was in power, and now the ruling BJP is misusing the same agency against its rivals.
Speaking to ANI, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said that Congress must clarify whether they support the actions of the ED since the agency was established by them. He also pointed out that if Congress is really concerned against the actions of ED, then the Congress Working Commitee (CWC) must pass a resolution that they will scrap ED after coming to power.
“Congress must decide whether ED is right or wrong. ED was started by Congress…They misused the CBI and other institutes… Now, it is the BJP’s turn to misuse the ED. Congress should decide once and for all if the ED is good or bad because when the ED takes action against someone else, Congress celebrates it…Rahul Gandhi should pass a resolution in their CWC meeting that they will scrap the ED if they come to power… If they really think that the ED is being misused, then they should promise such a resolution to the people of the country,” KT Rama Rao told ANI.
The origin of the Enforcement Directorate goes back to May 1, 1956, when an ‘Enforcement Unit’ was formed in the Department of Economic Affairs for handling Exchange Control Laws violations under Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, 1947 (FERA ’47).
On Tuesday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a prosecution complaint (chargesheet) against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi in connection with the National Herald money laundering case. The chargesheet also names Congress leader Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and others, including several firms.
The matter has been listed for arguments on cognisance in the Delhi Rouse Avenue Court on April 25. The prosecution complaint has been filed under Sections 44 and 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, for the offence of money laundering, as defined under Section 3, read with Section 70, and punishable under Section 4 of the PMLA, 2002.
